Dubai has fined and shut down 3 car rental companies with a minimum of 10,000 dirhams for violating consumer rights.

Three Dubai car rental companies have been shut down in 2023-2024 for violating consumer protection laws, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism said.

Fines vary depending on the violation, with a minimum of 10,000 dirhams. If the violation is repeated, the fine will be doubled each time. However, we will not wait until then. In case of repeated violations, the offices of such companies will be closed. We have closed three car rental company offices - two in 2023 and one in the first quarter of this year," Ahmed Ali Musa, director of consumer protection at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism in Dubai, told The Gulf Times in an interview.

Recently, the Dubai Consumer Protection and Fair Trade Corporation, which operates under the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, issued a directive to all car rental companies to return customer deposits within 30 days of returning the car.

Dubai's car rental industry reported a 23.7 percent growth in the number of registered companies in the first half of 2022, up from 1,087 registered companies in the same period last year, according to the Roads and Transport Authority. In the first half of 2022, about 78,000 vehicles were registered, while in the same period last year, there were 69,000 vehicles.
