The British company plans to turn the deserts of the UAE into hills that can be cultivated with wheat and corn

A climate technology start-up with headquarters in the UK and operations in the UAE has ambitious plans to turn large swaths of desert into arable land for crops such as wheat and corn.

Founded in 2023 by Abdul Aziz Bin Reza, Dr Samsurin Welch (COO), Eva Morales (Chief Strategy Officer), and Dr. Harjit Singh (Chief Engineer), HyveGeo is developing microalgae technology for carbon sequestration and soil regeneration.

The operation, based mainly in the UAE, is currently in the pilot phase, but it is hoped to be commercial by the end of 2025 and start greening the desert.

Mr Bin Redha, CEO of HyveGeo, says the company started by looking at different ways to remove carbon dioxide from the air to sell carbon credits.

Biochar is created through pyrolysis, where you heat microalgae to 500-600 degrees Celsius and they're left with a black, charred substance. They combined biofertilizer and biochar with other ingredients to create a product that can turn sand into soil ready for cultivation over time.
